Vivian Chesterley is a contemporary Pacific Northwest waterscape painter. Her deep regard for the natural world shines through in her oil paintings. “I grew up watching the sun’s light dance over the waters of Puget Sound, seeing incredible sunsets, and checking every morning to see whether the mountains were out! I am continually drawn into the drama of waterscapes in all its many moods.”

She paints these moods somewhere between abstraction and realism, giving the viewer space to feel as well as see. She usually begins with a photo she’s taken as starting point, then looks at what is happening on the canvas to provide inspiration for how to proceed.

Vivian uses oil paint because of the rich colors that blend so easily. Using a palette knife, as well as a brushes, enables her to layer many colors on top of each other, creating texture and complex visual depth.
